So Marley has been scratching rather often lately, and I have a new flea and tick gel for him. So I decided to give it to him today.
One hour later he was running around the apartment like a crazy person, and I figured he just needed to go out. SO I took him out and he was going even more crazy and foaming at the mouth. everywhere. When I came inside, I looked at his bed and it was SOAKING wet. Not normal. So I called the vet and told them everything that was going on, and they asked me what brand of flea & tick stuff I was using. When I told them I used Sergeant's Gold they said that I needed to bathe him with dishsoap immediately. So I did.
I googled it (of course) and apparently this is a very common side effect of Sergeants, and the next thing to happen to the pet it seizures. Needless to say, Marley has been on 1:1 care this evening and I am NOT happy with it at all. There is no warning on the box. And now everything in my apartment is covered in drool. Plus my poor dog is going nuts-o.

love you, and i understand the ER "family" thing. It's easy to just see the science behind a code...until the family comes in...

    Hi Jessica,

My name is Julie and I am an online community relations liaison representing Sergeant’s. I am so very sorry to hear about the recent experience you and Marley have been through. When you noticed Marley’s reaction, washing in dish soap was the best thing you could have done. I recommend if you have not already, that you call Sergeant’s 24-hour hotline at 800-224-7387. There are two reasons I recommend you call. First, Sergeant’s wants to make sure that Marley is feeling better today and no longer experiencing any of these reactions you mentioned. The other reason is to gather some more information about this experience in order for Sergeant’s to start an investigation into why Marley had a negative reaction.

When a dog is drooling or foaming at the mouth, most of the time it is due to the product somehow coming in contact with the dog’s mouth. The drooling could be a reaction to the bitter and very unpleasant taste. If this is the case, rest assured that this reaction would in no way result in seizures. It is extremely rare to see seizures as the result of proper use of Sergeant’s Gold.

We do receive questions about use and application from customers. “Look at the Label” http://www.lookatthelabel.com is an online resource here for pet owners that may have questions before, during and after application, or that just want to be sure they understand the use and application recommendations. It has been our hope that this resource is being used and shared with friends and family members that use flea and tick medication on their dogs so that pets are happy and healthy and calls we receive about errors are eliminated. Of course, this is not to say that you did not follow measures, as just like in the human world, there is always the risk of an allergic reaction when using any medication.

There are the rare occurrences where your dog may have an allergic reaction to the product. No medication proves to be 100% allergy free. Some dogs may be more susceptible to allergic reactions while others will not be affected negatively at all. I think you will be pleased to know that Sergeant’s is working with the EPA to address some of your concerns with the packaging. This is something that’s currently happening, as Sergeant’s is now taking the necessary steps needed to better packaging and warnings for your pets.

Please know that Sergeant’s takes this matter extremely seriously and will do everything to ensure this investigation leaves you with some definitive answers. Please call 800-224-7387 at your earliest convenience. Again, I am so sorry to hear about your experience and hope Marley is doing much better today.

    All the best,
    Julie and The Sergeant’s Team

Sergeant knows there is something seriously wrong with their execution of releasing their products. Evidence is their financial investment in the campaign on how to “Read a Label.” No company would allocate money to run a campaign unless they were inspired by an overwhelming number of adverse reactions to their product.

Please log a complaint with the Consumer Affairs Site. It is easy and takes a second to record your experience. You will make a difference and possibly prevent this happening to another innocent being.

We need their Lawyers to be aware of the frequency and the severity of Sergeant’s Products Reactions. We need their help to get this product off the market.

    http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/sergeants.html

Hardest part for me, Sergeant says they read our daily cases of suffering yet they will not take this product off the market. Instead they continue to collect financial profits off of innocent Pet Parent’s suffering.

These parents love their animals as if they were human beings. If this product was for the consumption of humans then the reactions would be considered cruelty and the deaths would be equal to murder.

Hard for me to know this tragic experience will happen to someone tomorrow. Hard for me not to be able to stop it.
Sergeant please Stop it. You Can.
